Coach Park Hang-seo responded to the recent criticism in a press conference Monday ahead of the World Cup qualifier match between Vietnam and Oman.

Vietnam coach addresses criticism ahead of Oman clash

"Currently, there are many criticisms aimed at us, especially after the game with China. I’m willing to take all of them, but don’t put it on my players and assistant. I will not accept that. My players are doing a good job," Park said.

After the 2-3 defeat against China in the final round of World Cup qualifiers last week, Park had received criticism on his substitution decision, especially when he replaced experienced defender Bui Tien Dung with 21-year-old Nguyen Thanh Binh, who made mistakes and let China's Wu Lei score twice, including a last-minute goal. In addition, Park kept using forward Phan Van Duc despite his poor form, while key attacker Nguyen Cong Phuong was subbed in too late.

Park later took responsibility for using Binh in the game. But a day later, he moved Binh to the U22 team instead of keeping him for the game with Oman. Some opinions stated it was a punishment for Binh. However, Park denied this.

"I moved Binh to the U22 team not because of his mistakes in the China game. The U22 team are preparing for the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers and it’s also an important tournament. We already have enough people in the national team for the game with Oman. I have consulted my assistants and feel that it’s the right thing to do since Binh needs to shake off the pressure - he’s also a key player in the U22 team," Park said.

Vietnam are last in group B after losing 1-3 to Saudi Arabia, 0-1 to Australia and 2-3 to China. The team will play the next game with Oman on Tuesday night at 11 p.m. (Hanoi time). It will be reported live on VnExpress International.
