Vietnam athletics star creates history at Tokyo Olympics

Quach Thi Lan on Saturday became the first Vietnamese track-and-field athlete to qualify for the Olympic semifinals.

She started strongly in heat 3 of the 400 m hurdles, remaining in the top two for the first 200 m.

But then she started falling behind in the last 200 m.

The U.S.’s Sydney McLaughlin finished first in 54.65 seconds, followed by Panama’s Gianna Woodruff (55.49 seconds) and Sara Slo of Denmark (55.52 seconds).

Jamaica’s Leah Nugent finish fourth but was disqualified for crossing lanes, opening the door for Lan, who had come fifth in 55.51 seconds.

The 24 athletes advancing to the semifinals will be divided into three groups, with the top two in each going into the final along with the two best third-place finishers.

Lan’s semifinal is on Monday afternoon.
