Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz arrived in Hanoi Wednesday night, starting an official five-day visit to Vietnam.

During his stay until Oct. 2, PM Cruz is expected to have a series of activities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and hold talks with Vietnamese leaders and attend the signing ceremony of several bilateral cooperation documents between the two countries, according to Vietnam News Agency.

This is the first visit outside of Latin America since Cruz took office in December 2019, and the first visit by a Cuban senior leader to Vietnam since 2018.

Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on Dec. 2, 1960, two years after the success of the Cuban Revolution.

Vietnam has been supporting Cuba in aqua- and agriculture and Cuba imports 300,000-400,000 tons of rice from Vietnam every year.

Some Vietnamese enterprises are investing in industrial park infrastructure construction, construction material production, and detergent production in Cuba.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Cuba provided Vietnam with 5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines and to help Vietnam.

In September 2021, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Cuba and made the first visit of a foreign head of state to Cuba since the pandemic broke out.
