The female moon bear, weighing 120 kg, had been raised in a multi-layered metal cage at a family in Nam Dinh's Truc Ninh District. The family willingly handed the bear over to authorities.

After a 10-minute observation, experts at Animals Asia decided to sedate her, as the cage's opening was too small and the space was tight, making it difficult to move her to a bigger cage.

There are signs that the bear's bile had been extracted. Nam Dinh still has five bears being raised in captivity at a farm.

Tuan Bendixsen, Vietnam Director of Animals Asia, said the bear is one of the few in Vietnam that is unchipped. Vietnamese regulations said people can only raise chipped, registered bears.

Female moon bears are easy to recognized thanks to their characteristic fur color and patterns.
