Storm Chaba to bring rain to Vietnam's north from Saturday night
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at around 10 a.m. on Saturday, the storm lay 310 km to the east-southeast of Quang Ninh Province, home to Ha Long Bay, with the strongest wind speed of 133 kph.
In the next three hours, the storm will move toward the northwest direction at a speed of 15-20kph.
The center predicted that Chaba will land in the Leizhou Peninsula of China on Saturday and continue to go deep into the Guangxi region that borders Vietnam.
Under the storm's impact, the northeast region of Vietnam will receive rainfall of 50-150 mm from Saturday evening to Sunday. In some places, the rainfall is forecast at more than 200 mm.
Vietnam’s northeast region comprises provinces of Bac Giang, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang and Yen Bai.
The coastal area should expect strong waves of 6-8m high, and localities from Quang Ninh to Ninh Binh should be prepared for floods in low-land areas, the center said.
Weather forecast stations of Japan, Hong Kong and London made similar predictions, saying that Chaba will make landfall in Guangxi within Saturday.
Chaba is the first storm to appear in the East Sea this year. The period from June to October is normally the rainy and stormy season in Vietnam.
It is expected that 10-12 storms will enter Vietnam's waters this year and around half of them will make landfall.
