HCMC allows inter-district deliveries from Thursday

Le Hoa Binh, deputy chairman of the committee, said the decision was to support the people while the city extends its social distancing order under Directive 16 until the end of September, and certain districts like District 7, Cu Chi and Can Gio begin reopening.

Back in July, delivery staff were only allowed to operate within a single district for the sake of disease prevention and better management. Since late last month, delivery staff in eight districts considered as high-risk areas were allowed to operate instead of only in low-risk areas, increasing the number of available delivery workforce to around 25,000, which have helped with relieving people's demands to shop from home.

An average delivery person can take 20-25 orders a day, meaning 25,000 of them can satisfy the demands of up to 650,000 families, according to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade.

Ho Chi Minh City, epicenter of Vietnam's fourth coronavirus wave, has recorded 303,475 local Covid-19 cases in the new wave.

The southern metropolis has undergone a series of social distancing order, with the latest one being extended until the end of September.

As strict coronavirus control measures like not allowing people to go out and relying instead on the military and local authorities to deliver food and other necessities to houses are prolonged, shopping demands have been on the rise. Starting September 7, Ho Chi Minh City has also allowed food and beverage businesses to resume operations, but only serve takeaways in order to prevent infections.
