VĨNH LONG — Southern culture and lifestyle are captured in art pieces at a special exhibition opened in Vĩnh Long Province this week.

The event, Triển Lãm Mỹ Thuật Khu Vực Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long (Fine Arts Exhibition of Cửu Long River Delta Region), features a variety of traditional and contemporary works.

It has attracted 194 young and veteran artists from the 13 provinces of the Cửu Long (Mekong) region.

Nearly 200 paintings and sculptures of different materials are on displayed.

Many works feature women and children in daily life, along with the beauty of traditional celebrations and festivals of ethnic minority groups.

The event’s organisers include the Việt Nam Fine Arts Association and the Vĩnh Long Province Association of Literature and Arts.

“Our artists have travelled around the region to find a new source of inspiration, capturing the beauty of daily life,” said Nguyễn Thị Quyên Thanh, deputy chairman of Vĩnh Long Province's People's Committee. "Through their art, the traditional values of the Cửu Long region are preserved and explained."

The organisers presented one first prize, two second prizes and three third prizes.

All of the prize-winning works highlight local people in life and work.

“I hope viewers will learn about the South’s culture and people through my works,” said painter Phạm Thanh Hùng of An Giang Province.

Hùng won the third prize with his painting called Những Cô Gái Với Chiếc Khăn Lụa Mat’ra (Girls in Traditional Silk Scarfs), featuring beautiful girls of An Giang.

Hùng finds himself while painting the beauty of rural areas and farmers, and his works introduce the culture of his homeland, An Giang, to viewers.

He has organised several solo and group exhibitions.

The first prize was presented to female artist Lê Thị Thắm of Bến Tre Province for her oil painting entitled Thiếu Nữ (The Girl).

The event will close on November 26 at 109 Võ Văn Kiệt Street, Vĩnh Long. — VNS
